Breakout Player Recap: Linebacker

Linebackers had a very big impact on the way the season went last year. James Harrison won defensive player of the year and who knows how far the Ravens would have gone if Ray Lewis didn't play so well. While players like Lewis are a few years from retiring, there are a lot of young talented linebackers who will fill their void. Here are how my breakout predictions from last year look now.



LaMarr Woodley Steelers:

What I said: Woodley didn't start a game in his rookie season but still managed to get 4 sacks. Now that Clark Haggans left for the Cardinals. Woodley has his chance to start for the Steelers and show why he has the upside to be one of the best pass rushers in the league. Woodley has the potential and opportunity to put up a Pro Bowl season in his first full year as a starter.

Now: Woodley put up big numbers in his first year as a starter recording 11.5 sacks and becoming a key player on a very strong Steelers defense. As long as James Harrison commands double teams, Woodley should continue to have double digit sack totals.

Hit or Miss: Hit

Ernie Sims Lions:

What I said: Sims has already established himself as one of the best linebackers in the league as he has 258 tackles in his first two seasons. So why is Sims on this list? That's because he plays for the Lions. Other than Thanksgiving day, football fans around the country don't get to watch Sims and they are missing out. He has already shown what he is capable of and is similar to a young Derrick Brooks. Another good season and Sims should be headed to Hawaii for his first Pro Bowl.

Now: Sims had another very productive year with 113 tackles and 1 sack. The problem is that those numbers are because the Lions defense was on the field most of the game. Sims has played very well his first few years in the league but the Lions must improve before Sims is known on a national stage.

Hit or Miss: Push

Jon Beason Panthers:

What I said: If not for Patrick Willis, Beason would have been talked about for his incredible rookie season. Beason had 140 tackles and 1 interception. He is in a similar boat as Sims as the Panthers don't get much national attention either. But if Beason keeps putting up numbers like that, it will be hard for most football fans to not pay attention.

Now: Beason was just as productive in his second season notching 138 tackles and 3 interceptions. He also did well in the team's only playoff game as he managed to have 8 tackles and an interception. If he puts those numbers up again this year, he should be making his first trip to the Pro Bowl.

Hit or Miss: Hit

David Harris Jets:

What I said: As a rookie, Harris only started 9 games. But he was a tackling machine as he had 127 on the year. Harris also had 5 sacks and forced 2 fumbles. With a full year starting, Harris could prove to be one of the best young linebackers in the league.

Now: Harris was starting to shine in his first year as a starter but a hamstring injury that cost him 5 games hindered his progress. The Jets defense should be one of the best in the league this year and in a big market, Harris could become one of the elite linebackers in the league.

Paul Posluszny Bills:

What I said: If Posluszny didn't have a season ending arm injury in week 3, he would be in the same discussion as Willis and Beason. In 3 games, he had 26 tackles which would have put him on pace for 139 tackles. Now Posluszny is healthy and with the Bills poised to make the playoffs, Posluszny has the chance to become a star in his second year.

Now: Posluszny put up good numbers in his first full season as he notched 110 tackles and an interception. With the improvements to the offense, the Bills defense shouldn't be on the field as much so it wouldn't be a surprise if Posluszny did even better in his second full season.

HIt or Miss: Push

D'Qwell Jackson Browns:

What I said: In his second season,Jackson showed flashes of his potential as he had 101 tackles, 1 sack and an interception. But because he plays for the Browns, nobody knows who he is yet. That should change this year as the Browns have 5 prime time games this season and with the additions of Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams up front, Jackson could be even better this year.

Now: Jackson was excellent in his third season recording 154 tackles with two sacks and three interceptions. The Browns were one of the biggest dissapointments last year which would explain why Jackson didn't make the Pro Bowl even though it was well deserved. Jackson is playing like an elite linebacker and it will only be a matter of time until he is regarded as one.

Hit or Miss: Hit

Thomas Howard Raiders:

What I said: Howard has all the makings to turn into a star in his 3rd season. He had 95 tackles last year and is one of the best linebackers in the league in pass coverage as he had 6 interceptions. With his 4.4 speed, Howard ended up taking two of those for touchdowns. With the Raiders improved defense, look for Howard to make his first Pro Bowl appearance in the near future.

Now: Howard's third season was almost identical to his second as he had 97 tackles and 1 interception. His interception total dropped due to the fact that teams were throwing away from him because of his great coverage skills and athleticism. Look for Howard to emerge this season if the Raiders contend in a weak AFC West.

Justin Durant Jaguars:

What I said: When Mike Peterson went down with an injury, the unknown Durant stepped in as a rookie and had 49 tackles and 1 interception. The most impressive part was how in his first playoff game against the Steelers, he stepped in and had 12 tackles. With Peterson returning to the middle, Durant will most likely move to the outside where he can utilize his speed and has the opportunity to be a game changing linebacker for years to come.

Now: Durant was solid in his first year as a starter, but the numbers weren't as good as expected as he had 70 tackles in 13 games. In his prime Mike Peterson was a tackling machine with the Jaguars and it wouldn't be surprising if Durant ends up following the same path.

Breakout Player Recap: Defensive Linemen

This is my first post for the defensive side of the ball in the player recap series. Fittingly, it starts with the men up front: the defensive linemen. I only picked 5 of them to breakout last year, but it should be interesting to see how they fared as some of them might have been picked a year too soon.

Gaines Adams Buccaneers:

What I said: Adams had a solid rookie year as he had 38 tackles and 6 sacks but at the end of the year, he showed why he was a top 5 pick in the draft. Adams started to get off the edge faster and learned how to use his great size and speed to create mismatches for his opponents. If Adams continues to improve, he could be in for a trip to Hawaii in the near future. Don't be surprised if Adams gets at least 10 sacks this year.

Now: Adams' second season was almost identical to his first. He had the same amount of tackles with 6.5 sacks and two interceptions. This should be the year where he takes the next step where he reaches double digit sacks and possibly makes the Pro Bowl.

Ray Edwards Vikings:

What I said: Edwards has the skill set to be a dominant defensive end in the league. He is 6'5 268 pounds and has 4.8 speed. Last year Edwards had 5 sacks but now with Jared Allen across from him and Kenechi Udeze out for the year, Edwards has a chance to shine. Don't be surprised if Edwards gets at least 10 sacks.

Now: Edwards didn't have double digit sacks like I predicted, but he did have his best year statistically of his career with 50 tackles and 5 sacks. Edwards will continue to be the beneficiary of Jared Allen double teams so it's only a matter of time until he is one of the league's sack leaders.

Brodrick Bunkley Eagles:

What I said: Bunkley started to show in his second year why he was worthy of a 1st round pick in 2006. He has incredible strength and the size to clog up the middle of the line. Bunkley has lost some weight this offseason and with the additions on the Eagles defense of Chris Clemons and Asante Samuel, Bunkley could develop into a Pro Bowl caliber player very soon.

Now: Bunkley didn't make the Pro Bowl, but he continued to be a huge presence on the inside. The Eagles have proven to be among the NFC's elite and if the defense plays well look for Bunkley to get his fair share of credit.

Hit or Miss: Push

Jovan Haye Buccaneers:

What I said: In his first year starting, Haye was very impressive as he had 68 tackles and 6 sacks. With the development of Adams and the core of the Bucs defense intact, there is no reason to doubt that Haye could have an even better season in 2008.

Now: After impressing his first year as a starter, Haye took a step back in 2008. He only had 33 tackles and went from six sacks to zero in the course of a year. Haye was picked up by the Titans this offseason and now has an excellent opportunity to fill the very large footsteps that Albert Haynesworth left behind.

Hit or Miss: Miss

Marcus Thomas Broncos:

What I said: If not for legal troubles, Thomas would have been a first round pick in 2007. Instead he fell to the Broncos in the 4th round and if he lives up to the first round hype, the Broncos will be very happy. Thomas impressed at times last year as he had 19 tackles and a sack in 5 starts. Thomas should show lots of flashes of stardom this year, but look for him to really breakout in 2009.

Now: Thomas started every game in his second season and while he wasn't as dominant as I thought he would be, he still showed flashes of stardom. Look for Thomas to be a key contributor on a Broncos team that's really looking to improve its defense.

Breakout Player Recap: Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

Like my last post, I will be breaking down how my predictions for who would break out last year look now. This time it is wide receivers and tight ends and while some didn't do that well, others did what I expected and more.


Wide Receiver:


Calvin Johnson Lions:

What I said: Johnson had a solid rookie year as he had 756 yards and 4 touchdowns. But compared to his hype coming in, that was a disappointment. Johnson has great size at 6'5 and with 4.3 speed and a 40' inch vertical, many people thought he would come right in and be an elite receiver. Johnson was bothered by a back injury last year which slowed him down so now that he is healthy and the Lions will be running a more balanced attack, don't be surprised if he has more than 1000 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Now: Even though he had multiple quarterbacks throwing him the ball, Johnson did what I expected and more in his second season. He averaged over 17 yards a catch and had over 1300 yards and 12 touchdowns. Johnson is now one of the elite receivers in the league and will be a guy everyone is fighting for in your fantasy league. If Matthew Stafford comes in and develops into everything the Lions think he can be, as scary as it is, Johnson can get even better.

Sidney Rice Vikings:

What I said: Rice had a solid rookie season as he had 396 yards and 4 touchdowns. Now he has added 8 pounds of muscle this offseason and with his 6'4 frame, it was important for him to fill out. Now with Bernard Berrian on the other side, Rice will have single coverage on smaller corners and become one of the best red zone targets in the league.

Now: Rice had nagging injuries all of last year and his stats took a big hit. While he did have four touchdowns, he only had 15 catches and averaged less than ten yards per. On the bright side, Rice is only 22 and is entering his third year which is a year where receivers such as Roddy White and Braylon Edwards took their games to the next level. The only problem is, the Vikings still aren't settled at quarterback.

Hit or Miss: Miss

Santonio Holmes Steelers:

What I said: Holmes had a very good sophomore campaign as he averaged over 18 yards a catch and had 8 touchdowns. But he should be even better this year as he has a great connection with Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward is starting to decline. Don't be surprised if Holmes gets at least 1200 yards this year and makes the Pro Bowl.

Now: Holmes had a solid regular season, but decided to breakout on the grandest of stages. Holmes was named the MVP of the Super Bowl after his 9 catch 131 yard performance. This also included a touchdown catch in the very last minute that will be replayed along with the David Tyree helmet in the NFL Films vault for the next 50 years. Considering his big game performance and Hines Ward's decline, many people will be expecting Holmes to become the number one receiver and possibly make his first Pro Bowl this upcoming year.

Mike Walker Jaguars:

What I said: I was very high on Walker last year until the Jaguars put him on injured reserve. Now he is fully healthy and with Jerry Porter missing preseason, Walker might come in to training camp as the Jaguars number one receiver. Don't be surprised if Walker becomes one of the better players from the receiver heavy 2007 draft class.

Now: Walker always shows flashes of potential, but those glimpses are always ruined due to injuries. After his first career 100 yard game on Sunday Night Football, Walker then goes on to miss the next four games as he's in the hospital with a staph infection. The Jags are looking for a receiver to start opposite Torry Holt now though and as of now, Walker is the leader in the clubhouse.

Hit or Miss: Push

Anthony Gonzalez Colts:

What I said: Gonzalez had a solid rookie season as he had 576 yards and 3 touchdowns. But with Marvin Harrison declining and his health a factor, Gonzalez could be starting for one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Gonzalez probably won't become a number one receiver but he has the potential to be an elite number two. Don't be surprised if he gets around 1000 yards and 6 touchdowns this year.

Now: Gonzalez had a year very similar to his first as he had 664 yards and 4 touchdowns. Now that Marvin Harrison has been released, Gonzalez will be the starter and should get more balls thrown his way. He will probably never be a number one, but Gonzalez could develop into a premier number two receiver.

Hit or Miss: Push

Chansi Stuckey Jets:

What I said: Like Walker, Stuckey was placed on injured reserve for his whole rookie season. Stuckey though could come in this year and right away be the slot receiver for the Jets and with his speed, gives them another deep threat. With the quarterback situation still unsettled, Stuckey should show glimpses this year but should really start hitting his stride in 2009.

Now: Stuckey was one of the pleasant early season surprises as he scored a touchdown in each of his first three games. However, that was all he scored. With the departure of Laveranues Coles, Stuckey should get more balls thrown his way and touchdowns this year.

Hit or Miss: Miss
Tight End:


Ben Utecht Bengals:

What I said: Utecht is a pass catching tight end and he now gives Carson Palmer a dimension he has never had during his time in Cincinnati. Utecht has great size at 6'6 and has experience in pass oriented offenses as he was previously with the Colts. Utecht could end up with around 55 catches and 5 touchdowns in his first year with the Bengals.

Now: Utecht only played 10 games last season but for someone who was primed to have a breakout year, he really disappointed. In an offense that has been looking for a pass catching tight end, Utecht only caught 16 passes for 123 yards. The Bengals drafted Chase Coffman in the third round this year so it will be interesting to see what ends up happening with Utecht.

Hit or Miss: Miss

Marcedes Lewis Jaguars:

What I said: Lewis has great size and soft hands and with the Jaguars low risk passing attack could have a career year in his 3rd season. Last year Lewis had 391 yards and 2 touchdowns. Don't be surprised if that touchdown total at least doubles this year.

Now: Lewis actually had his best year statistically catching 41 balls for 498 yards. It is amazing how the Jaguars considering their receiver situation last year didn't throw it more to the 6'6 Lewis. Lewis is a productive player but in Jacksonville will never have the numbers worthy of a first round pick. If you switched the picks of Lewis and Maurice Jones-Drew, you would be looking at an excellent draft.

Zach Miller Raiders:

What I said: Miller had a very good rookie year as he caught 44 passes and 3 touchdowns. Miller has a growing connection with JaMarcus Russell and if Javon Walker isn't fully healthy, could have a big year. Don't be surprised if Miller catches at least 60 passes this year.

Now: Miller definitely built off his early connection with Russell as he is now one of the best tight ends in the league. While he had 778 yards last year, Miller only had one touchdown last year. As the Raiders young receivers continue to develop, look for that number to improve and for Miller to keep on getting better.

Hit or Miss: Hit

Brent Celek Eagles:

What I said: Celek may have only caught 16 passes last year, but he showed lots of potential at the end of the year and with his great size and L.J. Smith's injury history, Celek could get a very good chance to start and could put up big numbers.

Now: Celek didn't have many opportunities to shine last year, but he made the most of them. This included a 131 yard game against the Seahawks and a 10 catch game along with two touchdowns in the NFC Championship game. With L.J. Smith out of town, Celek will now be the starter and it wouldn't be surprising if he caught 50 balls this year.

Breakout Player Recap: Quarterbacks and Running Backs

Some people may remember that last year I had a series of posts where I predicted some players who could breakout and end up having big time years. Now with a new series only a week or two away, I thought it was a good time to reflect on how those predictions looked now. This is the first installment where I predicted quarterbacks and running backs that would breakout last year. Let's see how the predictions panned out.

Quarterback:

Jay Cutler Broncos:

What I said: Cutler may have thrown 20 touchdowns last year, but he is only reaching his potential. The Broncos acquired some new targets for Cutler in Keary Colbert and Darrell Jackson and if Brandon Marshall is suspended, it will soften the blow. Plus he always has Tony Scheffler to throw the ball to and he is on the verge of becoming an elite tight end. Don't be surprised if Cutler throws 30 touchdowns this year.

Now: Cutler may not have thrown for 30 touchdowns like I predicted, but numbers wise it was his best as a pro throwing for over 4500 yards and 25 touchdowns. Cutler wasn't one to shy away from headlines this offseason. He was traded to the Bears due to his frustration after new head coach Josh McDaniels was looking into getting his old pupil Matt Cassel. Cutler won't have as good a supporting cast in Chicago, but they are an immediate contender in the NFC North.

Hit or Miss: Push
Trent Edwards Bills:

What I said: Edwards was solid as a rookie last year as he was a very good game manager and ended up throwing 7 touchdowns. Now that he has a full year of the offense under his belt along with a 6'6 red zone threat in James Hardy, don't be surprised if Edwards throws 20 touchdowns this year.

Now: Edwards was solid in his first year as a starter completing nearly 66 percent of his passes along with 11 touchdowns. The main problem was that the Bills receiving corps were depleted last year and lacked size after James Hardy suffered a season ending injury. This year, Terrell Owens enters the picture and he is usually on his best behavior the first year with a new team so Edwards could put up some big numbers.

Hit or Miss: Push

Drew Stanton Lions:

What I said: Many people forgot about Stanton last year as he went on injured reserve with a knee injury during preseason. But he is a name you want to remember this year. If the Lions struggle out of the gate, Stanton should see some playing time and with the targets he has in Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson, he could put up some big numbers. That and the fact the Lions usually play from behind, it wouldn't be surprising if Stanton threw at least 15 touchdowns.

Now: It doesn't look that good for Stanton. Three quarterbacks played before him last year and with Matthew Stafford now in the picture, it doesn't look like Stanton will get the chance to play. As of right now he is a project as it is hard to learn a system when you have two offensive coordinators in two years. If he doesn't make the Lions roster this year, look for Stanton to try and catch on with a team like the Colts where he is in no rush to play and he will have two or three years to learn the offense.

Hit or Miss: Miss

JaMarcus Russell Raiders:

What I said: The Raiders got some new weapons on offense this offseason and nobody benefits more than Russell. Russell now has a year of learning the offense and has a good group of receivers led by Javon Walker and Ronald Curry. When the Raiders start pulling it together later on in the season, people will be talking about how well Russell is performing and how he could lead them to the playoffs in 2009.

Now: Like I predicted, the Raiders came on late in the season and it was in large part due to Russell. In the last two games of the year which were both Raiders wins, Russell threw for 384 yards 4 touchdowns and an interception. If he continues to play the way he did at the end of the year, the Raiders could surprise people in a very weak AFC West.

Hit or Miss: Push

Troy Smith Ravens:

What I said: If you've read my previous posts, you can see that I am very high on Smith and think he should be the starter in Baltimore. He was solid in limited playing time last year and could thrive under new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron as he will take pressure off of him by getting a ground game going. Joe Flacco might be the long term answer for the Ravens, but don't be surprised if Smith shines when he gets his chance.

Now: If it wasn't for tonsillitis that caused him to drop 20 pounds, Smith would have been the started in Baltimore. Things didn't work out that badly for the Ravens though as Joe Flacco came in and played very well in his rookie season. Even if he played, Smith wasn't the quarterback of the future so unless he gets traded, he will be a quality backup option.

Hit or Miss: Miss

Tyler Thigpen Chiefs:

What I said: When most people see this, the first thing that comes to mind is, "Who?" but Thigpen could have a big impact this season. Thigpen has already impressed the Chiefs as he passed Damon Huard for 2nd on the depth chart entering training camp. Thigpen has a strong arm, good mechanics and 4.7 speed which is solid for a quarterback. He's only a few bad games from Brodie Croyle from starting and if Croyle plays anything like last year, Thigpen could be playing quickly.

Now: Even though the Chiefs only won two games last year, they were actually pretty fun to watch when Thigpen was at the helm. In 11 starts he threw for over 2600 yards and 18 touchdowns and he also led all quarterbacks with 386 rushing yards. Unfortunately, Thigpen won't get to start this year after the Chiefs traded for Matt Cassel. This shouldn't be the last we hear of Thigpen though as a team should be more than willing to give him a chance when he is a free agent due to his performance last year.

Hit or Miss: Hit

Running back:

Marshawn Lynch Bills:

What I said: In his rookie season, Lynch ended up with over 1100 rushing yards to go along with 7 touchdowns. The scary part is, he missed 3 games. If Lynch played the whole season, Adrian Peterson might not have ended up with the rookie of the year award. Lynch's sophomore campaign should be even better as he now has a year of the offense under his belt and it doesn't hurt that he plays the Dolphins and Jets a combined 4 times. By the end of this year, Lynch could be mentioned in the same breath as the elite running backs in the league.

Now: Lynch did make the Pro Bowl in his second year, but he isn't in the elite category yet. His numbers actually declined in his second year and his suspension didn't help. With the improved passing game, Lynch could have a big year the only problem is after his arrest this offseason will he be around to enjoy it for all 16 games.

Selvin Young Broncos:

What I said: With Travis Henry gone, Young is now the starting back for one of the best rushing attacks in the league. He had a solid rookie year averaging over 5 yards a carry for 729 yards. WIth all of that in mind, Young looks like he's ready to put up big rushing numbers in typical Broncos fashion. Don't be surprised if he has over 1300 rushing yards this year.

Now: In a year in which the Broncos went through multiple backs, Young took a major step backwards in his second season. Granted, he did miss 8 games but he only ran for 303 yards and one touchdown. Considering the arrival of Knowshon Moreno, Young probably won't start this year but the 5 yards a carry average is a good indication he would be a very good third down back.

Hit or Miss: Miss

LenDale White Titans:

What I said: Many people bash White for his weight, but last year he had a career best 1110 yards in the starting role with 7 touchdowns. But if those numbers sound impressive, get this, he played all of last season on a torn meniscus. Now with Chris Johnson in the backfield to help carry the load, White could be even more productive this season. 1200 yards and double digit touchdowns isn't out of the question.

Now: White was a touchdown machine last year scoring 15 good for third in the league. He and Johnson formed the duo of "Smash and Dash" which is arguably the best running back tandem in the league. This could help White in the long run as the wear and tear from his bruising running style is toned down to sharing carries. If the passing game improves, White and Johnson could be even more explosive this year.

Hit or Miss: Hit

Pierre Thomas Saints:

What I said: When people think of Thomas, two questions come to mind. First, who names their son Pierre and the other is who is this guy? Well, I can only answer one of those questions but it should help. When Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush both went down with injuries, Thomas had his first career start in week 17 against the Bears where he had both 100 rushing and receiving yards. He is a north south runner and a good receiver. So basically he is what you get when you combine McAllister and Bush. With McAllister and Bush's health issues, Thomas could get some starts for the Saints this year and it wouldn't be surprising if he had over 1000 all purpose yards.

Now: Thomas had a very big year with over 900 total yards and 12 touchdowns. With Deuce McAllister gone, Thomas should get even more carries this year and it wouldn't be surprising if he is one of the top running backs in fantasy football either. While many people expect Reggie Bush to be the feature back in New Orleans, look for Thomas to be the featured back by the end of the year.

Mike Wallace Interview

This past weekend I had the opportunity to talk to the Steelers new rookie receiver Mike Wallace. The Steelers took Wallace in the 3rd round with the 84th pick. If you read my pre draft receiver rankings, you may remember that I had Wallace at number eight on the list. Along with being one of the fastest receivers in his draft class with a 4.33 forty yard dash, Wallace is also the first player interview on my blog. I would again like to thank Mike for taking the time out of his busy schedule and I wish him the best in his NFL career.

Fbkid: What was the whole draft process like for you?
Mike Wallace: It was nerve racking but it was a really good experience
FB: What was it like to be called on draft day?
MW: It was the best feeling in the world just to know that all of the hard work paid off.
FB: What is it like being reunited with your childhood friend Keenan Lewis?
MW: It’s good since it makes the transition easier knowing that you will go through the experience with somebody you know.
FB: What do you think you can bring to the Steelers?
MW: Competiveness, speed, whatever Coach Tomlin needs me to bring.
FB: What do you feel is your greatest strength as a player and what do you need to work on?
MW: My greatest strength is my speed but I need to work on my whole game as I can always get better.
FB: What current wide receiver do you think you compare most favorably to?
MW: DeSean Jackson but I’m a little bigger.
FB: What is your greatest football moment to date?
MW: Beating Florida in the Swamp.
FB: When did you realize you had a future in football beyond college?
MW: I always felt that if I stayed focused that I could make it since all of my coaches were really confident in me.

Fbkid's Fantasy Football Top Ten Rookies

Last year was a very good year for rookies in fantasy football. Running backs such as Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, Steve Slaton and Jonathan Stewart all had big impacts on people’s teams last year. That's not even mentioning the receivers such as DeSean Jackson and Eddie Royal along with Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco at the quarterback position. While this rookie class isn't as deep, there are some players who could have big impacts on your fantasy teams this upcoming season. Here are my top ten fantasy football rookies who could help you win your league next year.


1. Knowshon Moreno RB Broncos: The Broncos had a very good passing attack last year but with the Jay Cutler trade, that will take a hit. Moreno is a very durable back which the Broncos desperately need considering they went through seven last year. Running backs usually have the biggest impact on fantasy football right out of the gate and Moreno should be no different as the Broncos focus on improving their running game this year. Expect around 1300 total yards and 10 touchdowns.

2. Mark Sanchez QB Jets: Other than last year, rookie quarterbacks don't usually put up very good fantasy numbers. Sanchez though has the potential to pick up where Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco left off. Most rookie quarterbacks are thrown into the fire right away with a poor offensive line and are sacked 60 times. That won't be the case for Sanchez as he is protected by one of the league's best offensive lines. Sanchez is already the toast of New York but it won't be long before fantasy owners feel the same way. Expect around 3200 yards 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

3. Michael Crabtree WR 49ers: After seeing the numbers he put up in the pass happy Texas Tech offense, fantasy owners were salivating at the chance to take Crabtree. Crabtree should be very effective in the NFL but rookie receivers don't usually put up big fantasy numbers. Plus, the quarterback situation in San Francisco isn't settled as Shaun Hill and Alex Smith are battling for the starting job. Crabtree should be effective this year but he should really start putting up numbers in year two. Expect around 800 yards and 5 touchdowns.

4. Chris Wells RB Cardinals: Wells has a combination of size and speed that can make him a very effective fantasy back. He has the speed to run away from defenders and the size to score on the goal line. The only problems are that he isn't very durable and the Cardinals offensive line has struggled in run blocking. Wells has all the potential to be a top fantasy back in the Cardinals offense but don't forget that four years ago everybody was expecting JJ Arrington to have a huge rookie season. Expect around 900 total yards and 7 touchdowns.

5. Donald Brown RB Colts: Brown may not be the starting back for the Colts, but he has the potential to have a big time fantasy football impact in his rookie season. Brown doesn't have any "wow" factors in his running style but he is a very good all around back who catches the ball out of the backfield well. Brown is an interesting player to watch in rookie leagues as he will start off as a compliment to Joseph Addai but later on could become an elite fantasy back. Expect around 800 total yards and 6 touchdowns.

6. Jeremy Maclin WR Eagles: Maclin could end up being a bigger impact in fantasy football then Crabtree due to the fact that the Eagles have stability at the quarterback position. Maclin has excellent speed and he and DeSean Jackson will form one of the fastest receiver tandems in the league. If you get extra points in your league for return yards and special team’s touchdowns, Maclin could end up being a very good value in the middle rounds. Expect around 1500 total yards and 5 touchdowns.

7. Percy Harvin WR Vikings: There isn't really a true position for Harvin as he is more of a receiver/running back hybrid. But with all of that being said, he was a threat to score every time he touched the ball at Florida. He is a very raw receiver but the Vikings already said they will use him in similar ways that Urban Meyer did at Florida. He won't ever be a number one fantasy receiver but he could put up very similar numbers to what Reggie Bush put up his rookie season. Expect around 1300 total yards and 6 touchdowns.

8. Shonn Greene RB Jets: With both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington wanting new contracts, Greene could have a very big role in the Jets offense this year. He isn't a threat to score every time he touches the ball but has good size and could be a touchdown vulture around the goal line. He is worth keeping an eye on in keeper league as he could very well be the Jets feature running back next year. Expect around 800 total yards and 5 touchdowns.

9. LeSean McCoy RB Eagles: Since Brian Westbrook isn't very durable, McCoy could have a bigger impact on fantasy leagues then you would expect. Like Westbrook, McCoy is a very good receiver and he is also a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Look for McCoy to have a big impact as a complimentary back this year. Expect around 900 total yards and 4 touchdowns.

10. Rashad Jennings RB Jaguars: Jennings was the top small school running back in the draft this year and it was a shock to many that he fell to the Jaguars in the 7th round. Like Maurice Jones-Drew did three years ago, Jennings has the potential to burst on the fantasy scene right away. The Jaguars are looking to run the ball again and Jones-Drew who is now the feature back started to breakdown towards the end of the year as he was getting the ball almost 40 times a game. Keep an eye on Jennings in the preseason and the first few weeks of the season before it's too late. Expect around 800 yards and 6 touchdowns.

The Next Joe Flacco?

At this time a few years ago, Joe Flacco was an unknown name to the casual football fan. That is hardly the case now. Flacco came in as a rookie from Delaware which is hardly a football factory and led the Ravens to the AFC Championship game. Now there is another quarterback waiting in the wings at Delaware who is similar in many ways to Flacco. His name is Pat Devlin.

Even though he is now playing for Delaware, Devlin isn't a completely unknown name. He was widely considered one of the best quarterbacks in the country coming out of high school and was the backup quarterback last year at Penn State. Devlin originally committed to Miami out of high school but had a change of heart.

Devlin did get some playing time at Penn State last year as he completed 25 of 47 passes for 459 yards four touchdowns and no interceptions. So one thing that may come to mind is why is he transferring? Penn State is looking to install a new spread offense and that doesn't fit Devlin's abilities as he has all the qualities of a drop back quarterback.

One thing that set Flacco apart from other quarterbacks was his size. At 6'6 230, Flacco is one of if not the tallest quarterback in the league. He also has a rocket arm that helps him complete throws most quarterbacks can only dream of making. Devlin has both of those qualities. He is 6'4 222 pounds and has a very strong arm even though it may be a notch lower then Flacco's.

Even though Devlin hasn't really played, the road has already been paved for him to get to the next level. Just like Flacco he has a very good chance of flying up draft boards due to impressive showings in workouts. It wouldn't be surprising with his drop back tools if he works himself into the 1st or 2nd round whatever year he comes out.

Fbkid's Pre Preseason Power Rankings

In a few months, training camp will start so it is time for me to unveil my first power rankings of the year. Every team has made lots of changes this offseason so it should once again be a great NFL season. Here are my pre preseason power rankings.

1. Pittsburgh Steelers: They are the defending champs and until they lose, they are number one.

2. New England Patriots: With Tom Brady coming back, the Patriots should be fully loaded this year. They will be the favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.

3. Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles had an excellent offseason adding Jason Peters at left tackle and adding players such as Jeremy Maclin and LeSean McCoy through the draft. Don't be surprised if we see a rematch of Super Bowl 39 in February.

4. Indianapolis Colts: As long as Peyton Manning is under center, the Colts will be contenders. The defense needs to get healthy and Jim Caldwell will have a tough job replacing Tony Dungy.

5. Arizona Cardinals: Fresh off a Super Bowl appearance the Cardinals improved this offseason adding Bryant McFadden and Chris Wells in the draft. They should win the NFC West again but they won't be flying under the radar this year.

6. New York Giants: The Giants will be very strong on defense once again and if Hakeem Nicks fills the void left by the Plaxico Burress they will be explosive on offense as well. They should be one of the last teams standing come January.

7. Baltimore Ravens: Last year was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Ravens. This year if Joe Flacco and the passing game improve, they could make the Super Bowl. Don't forget that Ben Roethlisberger won the Super Bowl in his second year.

8. Atlanta Falcons: It's hard to imagine based on where he was picked but Matt Ryan exceeded expectations last year. With the addition of Tony Gonzalez to an already explosive offense, don't be surprised if they are even better this year.

9. Tennessee Titans: With their strong defense, as long as the Titans can run the football they will be in every game. If Kerry Collins plays like he did last year, they could be just as good. The main question is what they will end up doing with Vince Young.

10. San Diego Chargers: The Chargers are a very deep team and should easily win the AFC West. The defense should also get better as Shawne Merriman is returning from injury.

11. Carolina Panthers: The Panthers should be strong again with a very good rushing attack and a stingy defense. Jake Delhomme is the key here as it's going to be a long year if he frequently plays like he did against the Cardinals last January.

12. New Orleans Saints: The Saints have really improved on defense this offseason and with an explosive offense could be ready to take it to the next level in the tough NFC South.

13. Houston Texans: The Texans have lots of talent and this could finally be the year they make the playoffs. Matt Schuab has had a hard time staying healthy and with the loss of Sage Rosenfels, it will be hard for the team to compete if he isn't.

14. Minnesota Vikings: Even without a quarterback, the Vikings are the most well rounded team in the NFC North. The division is a three team race but as long as they get solid play from Sage Rosenfels the Vikings have the talent to take it.

15. Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks may have struggled last year, but they are built to win right away. Don't be surprised if in an easy NFC West if they got 8 or 9 wins this year.

16. Chicago Bears: Jay Cutler gives the Bears the franchise quarterback they have been looking for since Jim McMahon. The defense is still strong but other than Devin Hester who does Cutler have to throw to?

17. Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys still need another receiver to start across Roy Williams but the running game should really improve this year with Felix Jones healthy. The defense is solid but it all comes down to Tony Romo winning when it matters.

18. Cincinnati Bengals: Could they be this year's Cardinals? Carson Palmer is finally healthy and they are coming off an excellent draft. The defense is improving but in a tough AFC North they are probably still a year or two away.

19. Green Bay Packers: The offense isn't a problem for the Packers. The defense on the other hand had a hard time stopping anyone next year. If the defense improves in their new 3-4 alignment and Aaron Rodgers plays well again, they could make a push for the division title.

20. Buffalo Bills: The Bills have enough talent to be a playoff team but it all comes down to how Trent Edwards plays.

21. New York Jets: If they choose to start him right away, Mark Sanchez is in a great situation. With a very strong supporting cast. Sanchez could lead the team to a season like the Falcons had last year.

22. Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins made huge strides last year but they could be this year's version of the Browns. They will be tough this year but in 2010 look for them to emerge into an elite team in the AFC.

23. Washington Redskins: Considering they are clearly the 4th place team in the division, it will be hard for the Redskins to compete in the NFC East. In any other division they could be a 9-10 win team.

24. Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars were a trendy Super Bowl pick last year but are still rebuilding. If they keep drafting the way they did this year, it won't be long until they are back in that conversation.

25. Kansas City Chiefs: After trading for Matt Cassel the Chiefs are now settled at the quarterback position. Scott Pioli needs to get another draft of his players in the system but until then, they will be fun to watch.

26. Oakland Raiders: If JaMarcus Russell plays like he did at the end of last season, the Raiders could surprise some people. The defense is solid and more will be expected of Darren McFadden in his second year.

27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: This is a rebuilding year for the Bucs as the defense isn't as deep as it has been in recent years. Byron Leftwich should be a solid one year option but Josh Freeman is clearly the future. Look for the Bucs to contend in another year or two.

28. Denver Broncos: The only thing dumber than trading your franchise quarterback is trading a 1st round pick which is quickly shaping into a top 10 pick for a second rounder in Alphonso Smith. Smith is a very good player, but that's a huge price to pay for him. It has the makings of a long year for the Broncos.

29. San Francisco 49ers: Mike Singeltary will make sure this team gives it their all every week. If Shaun Hill steps up this team could surprise a lot of people.

30. Cleveland Browns: It's going to be a rough year for the Browns. They are switching coaches and can't decide on a quarterback. Look for them to in the thick of the AFC North in a couple of years.

31. St.Louis Rams: The Rams have some talent but were terrible last year. If Marc Bulger and the defense play better they could contend in a weak NFC West next year.

32. Detroit Lions: Even though Jim Schwartz will have this team ready to play, it's hard to put them any higher coming off a year where they didn't win a game.

Fbkid's 2009 Two Round NFL Mock Draft

The draft is less than 48 hours away and many things can still happen. Tony Gonzalez was traded to the Falcons today and that should be the first of many trades to come in the next day or so. This is my last mock for the year so I included my second round picks for the first time. I hope everyone enjoys the draft this weekend as it should be a lot of fun.

1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford QB Georgia: Right now Stafford looks like he will be the guy. Look for the Lions to try and get a deal with him in the next 24 hours.

2. St. Louis Rams: Jason Smith T Baylor: The Rams really need help on the offensive line and it will come down to either Eugene Monroe or Smith. Smith has more upside so he gets the nod here.

3. Kansas City Chiefs: Eugene Monroe T Virginia: People have had Aaron Curry slotted here for months but it makes more sense to invest over $30 million in a left tackle then a linebacker. Don't be surprised if the Chiefs try to trade down or surprise everyone and take Tyson Jackson who they love.

4. Seattle Seahawks: Mark Sanchez QB USC: The Seahawks would love to take one of the top offensive tackles here but if they are both gone, Sanchez is a great fit. Matt Hasselbeck will turn 34 this year and Sanchez will be able to learn the offense his first year or two. Don't completely rule out the Seahawks trading this pick either as it could be a hot commodity with Sanchez still on the board.

5. Cleveland Browns: Aaron Curry LB Wake Forest: The Browns would be ecstatic if Curry fell to them. He and D'Qwell Jackson could be a very good linebacker tandem for years to come. If Curry is off the board, don't be surprised if they take Michael Crabtree as they are still looking to shop Braylon Edwards or Tyson Jackson who would be a great fit to their 3-4 scheme.

6. Cincinnati Bengals: Andre Smith T Alabama: Even though Smith has done everything a player is told not to do in the draft process, he is still a top 10 talent. Don't completely rule out BJ Raji either as the Bengals were really interested in taking Sedrick Ellis last year. But when it's all said and done Smith actually has less character concerns than Raji does.

7. Oakland Raiders: Jeremy Maclin WR Missouri: This Raiders are in need of a big play receiver and Maclin has the speed that Al Davis craves.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech: The Jaguars would love to trade down but unless Sanchez is still on the board, that is very unlikely. Ever since Jimmy Smith retired the Jaguars have been looking for a number one receiver and Crabtree is their guy. He's arguably the best player in the entire draft and if it wasn't for his ankle injury could have been a top four pick. Don't be surprised if the Jaguars are interested in Raji as well but since they are looking at character he may not fit the mold.

9. Green Bay Packers: BJ Raji DT Boston College: With the Packers switching to a 3-4 defense, Raji would be the nose tackle they are looking for to stop the run. Other players to consider here are Brian Orakpo, Tyson Jackson and the dark horse Michael Oher as their offensive line is getting older.

10. San Francisco 49ers: Brian Orakpo DE Texas: The 49ers would love for either Sanchez or Crabtree to fall here but that is looking less likely every day. Orakpo could develop into the player that the 49ers thought Manny Lawson would be which is providing a consistent pass rush from the outside linebacker position. Don't be surprised if Aaron Maybin is considered here as some think he may have more upside and Orakpo is viewed by some as a workout warrior.

11. Buffalo Bills: Michael Oher T Mississippi: Now that they have traded Jason Peters, the Bills really need help on the offensive line and Oher is the best tackle available. Don't be surprised if the Bills try and trade up as they now have two first round picks but some other players they could take here include Aaron Maybin, Robert Ayers and Brandon Pettigrew.

12. Denver Broncos: Tyson Jackson DE LSU: Last year the Broncos had one of the most explosive offenses in the league but the defense prevented them from making the playoffs. Now that they are switching to a 3-4 scheme, Jackson is the perfect fit as he is the best 3-4 end in the class. The Broncos could also consider trading up to get Mark Sanchez and BJ Raji is an option if he is still available.

13. Washington Redskins: Aaron Maybin DE Penn State: The Redskins upgraded their defensive line this offseason when they signed Albert Haynesworth but after releasing Jason Taylor, they still need a pass rusher. That's where Maybin comes into the picture. Maybin may have more upside than any other pass rusher in the class and could develop into an all pro. The Redskins have also shown interest in pretty much any quarterback other than Jason Campbell so don't be surprised if they try trading up for Sanchez or shock everybody by taking Josh Freeman.

14. New Orleans Saints: Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio State: Chris Wells going here is starting to become a trendy pick but that isn't necessarily a need. People tend to forget that Pierre Thomas actually had a very good season last year and while he isn't a bruiser like Deuce McAllister, he is very effective. The Saints can score with anyone in the league but their secondary has always been a problem. Jenkins gives them versatility as he can play both corner and safety and considering the Saints need help at both, he's a perfect fit.

15. Houston Texans: Brian Cushing LB USC: Other than DeMeco Ryans, the Texans aren't that strong at linebacker. To make matters worse, Ryans wants a new contract and he hasn't received one from the Texans yet. Cushing could come in right away and be a very effective starter and if Ryans stays, they could have the start of a very good linebacker corps. Some other players that the Texans could consider are Cushing's college teammate Clay Matthews as his uncle, Bruce who is a Hall of Fame tackle is on the team's coaching staff and Peria Jerry as neither Amobi Okoye or Travis Johnson have lived up to expectations so far.

16. San Diego Chargers: Robert Ayers DE Tennessee: The Chargers would love for either Tyson Jackson or Malcolm Jenkins to be here but Ayers would be a very good fit as the Chargers don't get much pass rush from the end positions. Ayers has been flying up draft boards ever since his great performance at the Senior Bowl and if he continues to play like that in the NFL, he should be a force for years to come.

17. New York Jets: Josh Freeman QB Kansas State: Due to his physical attributes, Freeman has really been skyrocketing up draft boards in the past few months. Right now the Jets quarterbacks are Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff. While Clemens and Ratliff have both showed flashes of potential, neither of them is the answer. The Jets may also try and trade up for Mark Sanchez or take a big play receiver such as Darrius Heyward-Bey.

18. Denver Broncos: Vontae Davis CB Illinois: A couple of years ago, the Broncos had arguably the best starting corners in the league as they had Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly. While it isn't their fault that the front seven couldn't get pressure on the quarterback, Bailey and Bly weren't very productive last year and are both in their 30's. Davis could come in right away and contribute as a nickel corner while being groomed to be the number one corner in a couple of years.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Michael Johnson DE Georgia Tech: Every year there are a couple of surprises in the first round. This would be one of them. The Bucs are said to be in love with him and for good reason. On paper, Johnson is a top ten pick at 6'6 266 pounds and 4.6 speed. The biggest question surronding him is about his motor and how he has the tendencies to take plays off. If he gets everything in order, Johnson and Gaines Adams could be a very dangerous tandem for yers to come. The Bucs could also consider Peria Jerry after losing Javon Haye this offseason as well as Freeman if available but the recent signing of Byron Leftwich could prevent that from happening.

20. Detroit Lions: Peria Jerry DT Mississippi: It was obvious from the first week of the season when the Lions allowed over 200 yards to Michael Turner that run defense was an issue. After Cory Redding was traded it is even more important for the Lions to take a defensive tackle and Jerry is a very good value here.

21. Philadelphia Eagles: Knowshon Moreno RB Georgia: Considering last year's draft it's hard to believe that it would take this long for a running back to be picked. Brian Westbrook is getting older and is still very injury prone so it is important for the Eagles to get a durable backup. Some view Moreno as one of the ten best players in the draft so he would be an excellent value here. Chris Wells is also a possibility here but like Westbrook, he has trouble staying healthy.

22. Minnesota Vikings: Eben Britton T Arizona: As good as Adrian Peterson is, he could be even better if the Vikings improved the right side of their line. Britton could come in right away and start at right tackle which is the position he could be better suited for in the pros.

23. New England Patriots: Clay Matthews LB USC: Matthews is the perfect Patriots player. A hard- nosed player who worked his way up as a walk on at USC, Matthews could have more upside than any of his fellow USC linebackers. The Patriots have six picks in the top 100 so if they have really set their eyes on someone, they have the potential to trade up.

24. Atlanta Falcons: Louis Delmas S Western Michigan: This is another surprise as many people have Delmas as a 2nd round pick even though he's the best safety in the draft. The Falcons have a very big need at safety and to compete against teams in their division such as the Saints, it is important to get an upgrade at the position. After the trade to aquire Tony Gonzalez, another player to consider is Evander Hood as the Falcons almost drafted Glenn Dorsey over Matt Ryan last year and they still need to address the need.

25. Miami Dolphins: Everette Brown DE Florida State: When the whole draft process started, Brown was considered a top ten pick. Considering the Dolphins are in need of a pass rusher, Brown is too good a value for Bill Parcells to pass up at 25. The Dolphins could also go after a corner such as Vontae Davis if he fell here or a big receiver such as Darrius Heyward-Bey or Hakeem Nicks.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Rey Maulauga LB USC: Not many people at the beginning of last season would have thought Maulauga falls past the top ten let alone the top 20. Maulauga though is a perfect player for the Ravens defense. He plays with a swagger and would bring youth to the linebacker position. Most people think the Ravens will go with the local player Darrius Heyward-Bey but at 26, Maulauga is too good a value for Ozzie Newsome to pass up.

27. Indianapolis Colts: Evander Hood DT Missouri: Hood is a perfect fit for the Colts defensive scheme and would immediately bring energy to a unit that had only two sacks last year. If Hood isn't available, the Colts could go after a receiver to replace Marvin Harrison.

28. Buffalo Bills: Brandon Pettigrew TE Oklahoma State: The Bills are really considering taking Pettigrew at 11 so if he was here at 28 they would be doing cartwheels in the war room. Pettigrew is the most complete tight end in the class and would add another weapon for Trent Edwards to throw to.

29. New York Giants: Darrius Heyward-Bey WR Maryland: After the highly documented release of Plaxico Burress, the Giants are looking for a playmaking receiver. That defines Heyward-Bey who ran the fastest time in the 40 yard dash at the combine at 4.30. The Giants might also consider trading their pick for an established receiver such as Braylon Edwards or Anquan Boldin.

30. Tennessee Titans: Darius Butler CB Connecticut: When you are in a division that has the Colts and a receiver like Andre Johnson, it's important to have good corners. Butler is climbing up team's draft boards and would give the Titans another quality corner to start opposite Cortland Finnegan. Butler has added value as well as he can replace Chris Carr in the return game.

31. Arizona Cardinals: Chris Wells RB Ohio State: Even though they currently have Edgerrin James and Tim Hightower, running back is a position the Cardinals need to address. James has made it clear he doesn't want to return to the team while Hightower is more of a complementary back. Wells would be a great value here and at this point in the draft is too good to pass up.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alphonso Smith CB Wake Forest: For a team that has such a good defense, it's hard to believe that the Steelers corners are as bad as they are. Smith could come in right away and compete for a starting job. He is a very experienced corner who has very good instincts for the ball. If he was two inches taller, the 5'9 Smith would be a top 15 pick.

2nd round:

33. Detroit Lions: William Beatty T Connecticut: The Lions still need to address the left tackle position and after Beatty, the better talent at the position really starts to dry up.

34. New England Patriots: Sean Smith CB Utah: Smith is still a very raw corner as he is a converted wideout. He does have excellent range and could also help out right away at safety.

35. St. Louis Rams: Brian Robiskie WR Ohio State: Robiskie would be an excellent possession receiver to compliment Donnie Avery's big play ability.

36. Cleveland Browns: Larry English DE Northern Illinois: The Browns still need to find somebody who can rush the passer and English is an excellent value here.

37. Seattle Seahawks: Donald Brown RB Connecticut: Brown here would give the Seahawks great value as he will come in and contribute right away. Don't be surprised if he ends up putting up numbers similar to Matt Forte last year.

38. Cincinnati Bengals: Alex Mack C California: The Bengals continue to build their offensive line as they pick the best center in this year's class.

39. Jacksonville Jaguars: Phil Loadholt T Oklahoma: After signing Tra Thomas this offseason, the Jaguars don't need a left tackle to come in and play right away. Loadholt would be a great developmental pick and would start in the next year or so.

40. Oakland Raiders: Jamon Merideth T South Carolina: The Raiders really need help on the offensive line and Merideth is clearly the best tackle left on the board.

41. Green Bay Packers: Paul Kruger DE Utah: Kruger isn't very flashy, but he gets the job done and could come in right away and be effective as a situational pass rusher.

42. Buffalo Bills: Lawrence Sidbury DE Richmond: Sidbury is flying up the draft boards as he had very good workouts and also has the ability to be used as an outside rush linebacker. He is a bit of a developmental project coming from a small school, but he can pay big dividends.

43. San Francisco 49ers: Kenny Britt WR Rutgers: The 49ers are in need of a big play receiver and Britt who many view as a first round caliber receiver, is a great value at 43.

44. Miami Dolphins: Hakeem Nicks WR North Carolina: There is rumor that the Dolphins are interested in Nicks at 25 so if he fell here it would be an excellent value. Nicks is a physical receiver that the Dolphins really need to compliment Ted Ginn.

45. New York Giants: Clint Sintim LB Virginia: Sintim at 45 would be an excellent value as he is arguably the best pass rushing linebacker in the draft.

46. Houston Texans: William Moore S Missouri: At the beginning of the season, Moore was considered a first round pick. Even though he had a rough senior year, he would give the Texans a playmaker at safety that they have never had.

47. New England Patriots: Connor Barwin DE/LB Cincinnati: Barwin is a great pick for the Patriots as he is a converted tight end who is still very raw. Given time, he could turn into an elite pass rusher.

48. Denver Broncos: James Lauranitis LB Ohio State: Lauranitis is one of the safest picks in the entire draft and for a team with a bunch of holes on defense, would be a great value at 48.

49. Chicago Bears: Percy Harvin WR Florida: Due to the failed drug test and other character concerns, Harvin falls here. He may not be kind of receiver the Bears are looking for but him and Devin Hester on the same field would give defensive coordinators nightmares.

50. Cleveland Browns: DJ Moore CB Vanderbilt: Moore could come in right away and contribute as a nickelback and eventually overtake Brandon McDonald and start across from Eric Wright.

51. Dallas Cowboys: Jarron Gilbert DT San Jose State: Defensive tackle is a big need for the Cowboys and they will fall in love with Gilbert's freakish athleticism.

52. New York Jets: Derrick Williams WR Penn State: The Jets may have missed out on the bigger name receivers, but they still get a playmaker in Williams who will also help in the return game.

53. Philadelphia Eagles: Jared Cook TE South Carolina: Even though Brent Celek has shown glimpses of potential, Cook is an excellent receiver who would give Donavan McNabb another target. If he improves his blocking, he could become something special.

54. Minnesota Vikings: Juaquin Iglesias WR Oklahoma: Even though they drafted Sidney Rice and Aundrae Allison a few years ago, the Vikings are still looking for help at the receiver position. Iglesias could come in right away and compete for the number two spot.

55. Atlanta Falcons: Ron Brace DT Boston College: The Falcons will consider drafting a defensive tackle in the first round and would get great value if they took BJ Raji's sidekick here.

56. Miami Dolphins: Rashad Johnson S Alabama: Even though safety isn't really a need, Johnson is too good a talent for the Dolphins to pass up.

57. Baltimore Ravens: Mike Wallace WR Mississippi: The Ravens are in need of a big play receiver and Wallace fits the mold. He has 4.3 speed and could contribute right away in the return game.

58. New England Patriots: Pat White QB West Virginia: When you are as deep as the Patriots, you can afford to take risks like this. White is a proven winner and even though he will never play quarterback on the Patriots, defenses will always have to game plan for him the few plays he is in the game.

59. Carolina Panthers: Sen'Derrick Marks DT Auburn: The Panthers defensive line is getting older and developing Marks to play inside is a step in the right direction.

60. New York Giants: Duke Robinson G Oklahoma: Even though the Giants have arguably the best offensive line in the league, they still need to groom some young players. Robinson has lots of potential and when the team decides to go younger could come in and start.

61. Indianapolis Colts: LeSean McCoy RB Pittsburgh: McCoy would be an excellent value for the Colts as he is a very good receiver out of the backfield and would give the Colts a very good 1-2 punch at running back with Joseph Addai.

62. Tennessee Titans: Fili Moala DT USC: The Titans still need to replace Albert Haynesworth and Moala is the best defensive tackle on the board. If Moala plays anything like his cousin Haloti Ngata, the Titans will be getting a steal.

63. Arizona Cardinals: Andy Levitre G Oregon State: The Cardinals really need help on their offensive line and Levitre is good enough to come in and compete for a starting job.

64. Pittsburgh Steelers: Eric Wood C Louisville: The Steelers offensive line was considered the team's "Weak link" last year and Wood can come in and be their center for the next decade.

Fbkid's 2009 NFL Mock Draft #4

The Bills traded away all pro left tackle Jason Peters to the Eagles today and this is one of many trades that could shake up players draft stock. Don't be surprised if there are other trades in the upcoming days as well. This is my last mock draft until the two round mock that I will release few days before the draft. So for the next week or so, this is how I think the draft will shape out.

1. Detroit Lions: Matt Stafford QB Georgia: Right now Stafford looks like he will be the guy. Look for the Lions to get a deal done with him in the next couple of days.

2. St. Louis Rams: Jason Smith T Baylor: The Rams really need help on the offensive line and it will come down to either Eugene Monroe or Smith. Smith has more upside so he gets the nod here.

3. Kansas City Chiefs: Eugene Monroe T Virginia: People have had Aaron Curry slotted here for months but it makes more sense to invest over $30 million in a left tackle then a linebacker. Don't be surprised if the Chiefs really try to trade down as well.

4. Seattle Seahawks: Mark Sanchez QB USC: The Seahawks would love to take one of the top offensive tackles here but if they are both gone, Sanchez is a great fit. Matt Hasselbeck will turn 34 this year and Sanchez will be able to learn the offense his first year or two. Don't completely rule out the Seahawks trading this pick either as it could be a hot commodity with Sanchez still on the board.

5. Cleveland Browns: Aaron Curry LB Wake Forest: The Browns would be ecstatic if Curry fell to them. He and D'Qwell Jackson could be a very good linebacker tandem for years to come. If Curry is off the board, don't be surprised if they take Michael Crabtree as they are still looking to shop Braylon Edwards.

6. Cincinnati Bengals: Andre Smith T Alabama: Even though Smith has done everything a player is told not to do in the draft process, he is still a top 10 talent. Don't completely rule out BJ Raji either as the Bengals were really interested in taking Sedrick Ellis last year. But when it's all said and done Smith actually has less character concerns than Raji does.

7. Oakland Raiders: Jeremy Maclin WR Missouri: This Raiders are in need of a big play receiver and Maclin has the speed that Al Davis craves.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech: The Jaguars would love to trade down but unless Sanchez is still on the board, that is very unlikely. Ever since Jimmy Smith retired the Jaguars have been looking for a number one receiver and Crabtree is their guy. He's arguably the best player in the entire draft and if it wasn't for his ankle injury could have been a top four pick. Don't be surprised if the Jaguars are interested in Raji as well but since they are looking at character he may not fit the mold.

9. Green Bay Packers: BJ Raji DT Boston College: With the Packers switching to a 3-4 defense, Raji would be the nose tackle they are looking for to stop the run. Other players to consider here are Brian Orakpo, Tyson Jackson and the dark horse Michael Oher as their offensive line is getting older.

10. San Francisco 49ers: Brian Orakpo DE Texas: The 49ers would love for either Sanchez or Crabtree to fall here but that is looking less likely every day. Orakpo could develop into the player that the 49ers thought Manny Lawson would be which is providing a consistent pass rush from the outside linebacker position. Don't be surprised if Aaron Maybin is considered here as some think he may have more upside and Orakpo is viewed by some as a workout warrior.

11. Buffalo Bills: Michael Oher T Mississippi: Now that they have traded Jason Peters, the Bills really need help on the offensive line and Oher is the best tackle available. Don't be surprised if the Bills try and trade up as they now have two first round picks but some other players they could take here include Aaron Maybin, Robert Ayers and Brandon Pettigrew.

12. Denver Broncos: Tyson Jackson DE LSU: Last year the Broncos had one of the most explosive offenses in the league but the defense prevented them from making the playoffs. Now that they are switching to a 3-4 scheme, Jackson is the perfect fit as he is the best 3-4 end in the class. The Broncos could also consider trading up to get Mark Sanchez and BJ Raji is an option if he is still available.

13. Washington Redskins: Aaron Maybin DE Penn State: The Redskins upgraded their defensive line this offseason when they signed Albert Haynesworth but after releasing Jason Taylor, they still need a pass rusher. That's where Maybin comes into the picture. Maybin may have more upside than any other pass rusher in the class and could develop into an all pro. The Redskins have also shown interest in pretty much any quarterback other than Jason Campbell so don't be surprised if they try trading up for Sanchez or shock everybody by taking Josh Freeman.

14. New Orleans Saints: Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio State: Chris Wells going here is starting to become a trendy pick but that isn't necessarily a need. People tend to forget that Pierre Thomas actually had a very good season last year and while he isn't a bruiser like Deuce McAllister, he is very effective. The Saints can score with anyone in the league but their secondary has always been a problem. Jenkins gives them versatility as he can play both corner and safety and considering the Saints need help at both, he's a perfect fit.

15. Houston Texans: Brian Cushing LB USC: Other than DeMeco Ryans, the Texans aren't that strong at linebacker. To make matters worse, Ryans wants a new contract and he hasn't received one from the Texans yet. Cushing could come in right away and be a very effective starter and if Ryans stays, they could have the start of a very good linebacker corps. Some other players that the Texans could consider are Cushing's college teammate Clay Matthews as his uncle, Bruce who is a Hall of Fame tackle is on the team's coaching staff and Peria Jerry as neither Amobi Okoye or Travis Johnson have lived up to expectations so far.

16. San Diego Chargers: Robert Ayers DE Tennessee: The Chargers would love for either Tyson Jackson or Malcolm Jenkins to be here but Ayers would be a very good fit as the Chargers don't get much pass rush from the end positions. Ayers has been flying up draft boards ever since his great performance at the Senior Bowl and if he continues to play like that in the NFL, he should be a force for years to come.

17. New York Jets: Josh Freeman QB Kansas State: Due to his physical attributes, Freeman has really been skyrocketing up draft boards in the past few months. Right now the Jets quarterbacks are Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff. While Clemens and Ratliff have both showed flashes of potential, neither of them is the answer. The Jets may also try and trade up for Mark Sanchez or take a big play receiver such as Darrius Heyward-Bey.

18. Denver Broncos: Vontae Davis CB Illinois: A couple of years ago, the Broncos had arguably the best starting corners in the league as they had Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly. While it isn't their fault that the front seven couldn't get pressure on the quarterback, Bailey and Bly weren't very productive last year and are both in their 30's. Davis could come in right away and contribute as a nickel corner while being groomed to be the number one corner in a couple of years.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Michael Johnson DE Georgia Tech: Every year there are a couple of surprises in the first round. This would be one of them. The Bucs are said to be in love with him and for good reason. On paper, Johnson is a top ten pick at 6'6 266 pounds and 4.6 speed. The biggest question surronding him is about his motor and how he has the tendencies to take plays off. If he gets everything in order, Johnson and Gaines Adams could be a very dangerous tandem for yers to come. The Bucs could also consider Peria Jerry after losing Javon Haye this offseason as well as Freeman if available but the recent signing of Byron Leftwich could prevent that from happening.

20. Detroit Lions: Peria Jerry DT Mississippi: It was obvious from the first week of the season when the Lions allowed over 200 yards to Michael Turner that run defense was an issue. After Cory Redding was traded it is even more important for the Lions to take a defensive tackle and Jerry is a very good value here.

21. Philadelphia Eagles: Knowshon Moreno RB Georgia: Considering last year's draft it's hard to believe that it would take this long for a running back to be picked. Brian Westbrook is getting older and is still very injury prone so it is important for the Eagles to get a durable backup. Some view Moreno as one of the ten best players in the draft so he would be an excellent value here. Chris Wells is also a possibility here but like Westbrook, he has trouble staying healthy.

22. Minnesota Vikings: Eben Britton T Arizona: As good as Adrian Peterson is, he could be even better if the Vikings improved the right side of their line. Britton could come in right away and start at right tackle which is the position he could be better suited for in the pros.

23. New England Patriots: Clay Matthews LB USC: Matthews is the perfect Patriots player. A hard- nosed player who worked his way up as a walk on at USC, Matthews could have more upside than any of his fellow USC linebackers. The Patriots have six picks in the top 100 so if they have really set their eyes on someone, they have the potential to trade up.

24. Atlanta Falcons: Louis Delmas S Western Michigan: This is another surprise as many people have Delmas as a 2nd round pick even though he's the best safety in the draft. The Falcons have a very big need at safety and to compete against teams in their division such as the Saints, it is important to get an upgrade at the position. Other players to consider are Evander Hood and Brandon Pettigrew as those are two other positions where the Falcons need to get better.

25. Miami Dolphins: Everette Brown DE Florida State: When the whole draft process started, Brown was considered a top ten pick. Considering the Dolphins are in need of a pass rusher, Brown is too good a value for Bill Parcells to pass up at 25. The Dolphins could also go after a corner such as Vontae Davis if he fell here or a big receiver such as Darrius Heyward-Bey or Hakeem Nicks.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Rey Maulauga LB USC: Not many people at the beginning of last season would have thought Maulauga falls past the top ten let alone the top 20. Maulauga though is a perfect player for the Ravens defense. He plays with a swagger and would bring youth to the linebacker position. Most people think the Ravens will go with the local player Darrius Heyward-Bey but at 26, Maulauga is too good a value for Ozzie Newsome to pass up.

27. Indianapolis Colts: Evander Hood DT Missouri: Hood is a perfect fit for the Colts defensive scheme and would immediately bring energy to a unit that had only two sacks last year. If Hood isn't available, the Colts could go after a receiver to replace Marvin Harrison.

28. Buffalo Bills: Brandon Pettigrew TE Oklahoma State: The Bills are really considering taking Pettigrew at 11 so if he was here at 28 they would be doing cartwheels in the war room. Pettigrew is the most complete tight end in the class and would add another weapon for Trent Edwards to throw to.

29. New York Giants: Darrius Heyward-Bey WR Maryland: After the highly documented release of Plaxico Burress, the Giants are looking for a playmaking receiver. That defines Heyward-Bey who ran the fastest time in the 40 yard dash at the combine at 4.30. The Giants might also consider trading their pick for an established receiver such as Braylon Edwards or Anquan Boldin.

30. Tennessee Titans: Darius Butler CB Connecticut: When you are in a division that has the Colts and a receiver like Andre Johnson, it's important to have good corners. Butler is climbing up team's draft boards and would give the Titans another quality corner to start opposite Cortland Finnegan. Butler has added value as well as he can replace Chris Carr in the return game.

31. Arizona Cardinals: Chris Wells RB Ohio State: Even though they currently have Edgerrin James and Tim Hightower, running back is a position the Cardinals need to address. James has made it clear he doesn't want to return to the team while Hightower is more of a complementary back. Wells would be a great value here and at this point in the draft is too good to pass up.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alphonso Smith CB Wake Forest: For a team that has such a good defense, it's hard to believe that the Steelers corners are as bad as they are. Smith could come in right away and compete for a starting job. He is a very experienced corner who has very good instincts for the ball. If he was two inches taller, the 5'9 Smith would be a top 15 pick.

Byron Leftwich Signs With Buccaneers

Byron Leftwich is once again a quarterback for a Florida NFL team but this time is sure to have a happier ending. Leftwich signed a two year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today and should come in right away and compete for the starting job against Luke McCown, Josh Johnson and Brian Griese. Here is why Leftwich could become a quality starter along with a very good fantasy option during his time in Tampa.

During his time in Jacksonville as a Jaguar, nobody doubted Leftwich's talent. He had a very strong arm and when in a rhythm is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. The only problems are his long release and his lack of mobility. Even though he has worked to shorten his release, it wasn't Leftwich's fault that the Jaguars offensive line was average and couldn't hold up long enough to let him throw the ball. This and lots of pressure from the fans led to the Jaguars cutting Leftwich before the 2007 season and going with David Garrard as their starter.

From there Leftwich went on to play for the Falcons and he struggled as he came in during the middle of the season and didn't have the opportunity to digest the playbook as he only threw for 279 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Last year Leftwich was the backup for the Steelers and was arguably the best backup quarterback in the league. When Ben Roethlisberger went down on Monday Night Football against the Redskins Leftwich came in and went seven of ten for 129 yards and a touchdown to lead the Steelers to victory in front of his family and friends from his hometown.

Now Leftwich is a Buccaneer and he has the potential to be a very good fantasy quarterback. In Jacksonville Leftwich didn't have any weapons in the passing game other than Jimmy Smith. Now he has Antonio Bryant at receiver who is coming off a career season and Kellen Winslow who when healthy, is one of the league's best pass catching tight ends. The running game isn't too bad either as the Bucs signed Derrick Ward this offseason who is fresh off his first 1000 yard campaign as a Giant and Ernest Graham who in 2007 ran for 898 yards and ten touchdowns. The offensive line is also an upgrade over what he had in Jacksonville as Davin Joseph should be a staple at the Pro Bowl for years to come at Guard and Jeremy Trueblood is a decent option at tackle.

Overall, Leftwich finally has all the tools and weapons to show everyone the kind of player people thought he would be after being the 7th pick in the 2003 draft out of Marshall. This move can also prevent the Bucs from taking a quarterback in the first round as they now have Leftwich who at worst will be a very good one year option that will keep the Bucs competitive in a very tough NFC South.

Fbkid's 2009 Draft Rankings: Wide Receiver

In terms of immediate impact, last year’s class of receivers wasn’t a very good one. Donnie Avery, Eddie Royal and DeSean Jackson showed flashes of brilliance in their rookie years but the rest of the class was a disappointment. Many people had high expectations for Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas and James Hardy but none of them showcased their potential in their rookie seasons. Jerome Simpson, Andre Caldwell and Mario Manningham could all have big impacts this year due to changes this offseason. With the loss of TJ Houshmandzadeh and the future of Chad Ocho Cinco up in the air, both Simpson and Caldwell should get more playing time. Manningham has a great opportunity in New York as the Giants are looking for a number one receiver after the release of the troubled Plaxico Burress. Here are my wide receiver rankings for this year’s class.

1. Michael Crabtree Texas Tech: Crabtree is arguably the best player in this entire draft. He has very good hands and excellent body control when going up for jump balls. While he doesn't have elite speed, Crabtree is very good after the catch and plays faster. If it wasn't for his ankle injury, Crabtree could have been a top five pick but if he falls past the top ten, whoever gets him has the possibility of getting a steal.

2. Jeremy Maclin Missouri: Maclin in full pads could be the fastest player in the class. He has the ability to score everytime he touches the ball and has lots of upside. The only problem is he didn't run many NFL type routes at Missouri and will need to bulk up at the next level. Maclin coming out right now is a more polished Ted Ginn who was a top ten pick in the 2007 draft.

3. Hakeem Nicks North Carolina: Nicks is a very physical receiver with great hands who is excellent after the catch. He doesn't have great timed speed but is very tough to bring down. Nicks isn't put in the same class as the Crabtree's and Maclin's but could be the best receiver in the class.

4. Darrius Heyward-Bey Maryland: Heyward-Bey hasn't put up the numbers that some others on the list have but it's not his fault. He was in a run first offense with quarterback play that was average at best. Heyward-Bey has excellent speed but needs to work on his route running and isn't as elusive as you would think. If he works on these things, he has a very good chance of turning into a great player.

5. Kenny Britt Rutgers: Britt is a very physical receiver who is willing to go up and battle with defenders for a jump ball. He doesn't have great speed but is very competitive and should become a very good possession receiver at the next level.

6. Brian Robiskie Ohio State: Robiskie is a very polished route runner with great hands. That can be attributed to his father Terry, who is currently the receivers coach for the Falcons. Robiskie might be the most NFL ready receiver in this class but that also limits his upside. He should be a very good number two receiver for the next decade.

7. Percy Harvin Florida: If this was based on playmaking ability, Harvin would be near the top of the list. But as a receiver, he has a lot to work on. At Florida he never really ran routes and it is essential for him to develop this ability at the next level. Both durability and character are major issues as it was very hard for him to stay on the field at Florida and he has a documented history of incidents with refs, teammates and coaches. If Harvin develops as a receiver he could end up as a Santana Moss type player. But for many teams, the risk isn't worth the reward.

8. Mike Wallace Mississippi: Wallace is one of the fastest receivers in this year's class and has the potential to be a very good player at the next level. He really impressed as a receiver at the Senior Bowl and also has the ability to help out a team in the return game.

9. Jarett Dillard Rice: While Michael Crabtree was clearly the best receiver in college football the best few years, Dillard was actually more productive. In the past three years, Dillard had 257 catches for 3614 yards and 55 touchdowns. He is a very good route runner and has excellent body control. Dillard is quicker than he is fast and has the potential to be this year's Greg Jennings.

10. Mike Thomas Arizona: Thomas, who is the Pac 10's all time receptions leader, is the best slot receiver in this class. He is a very good route runner and while he doesn't have elite speed, is very quick in and out of his cuts and has the ability to get away from tacklers. Look for Thomas to come in and have a rookie season like Davone Bess of the Dolphins where he makes an immediate impact as a sure handed receiver.

Fbkid's 2009 Draft Rankings: Running Back

Last year's draft class was a very strong one for running backs. Jonathan Stewart, Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, Kevin Smith and Steve Slaton all had very big impacts on their teams last year. Darren McFadden, Rashard Mendenhall and Felix Jones should also have big impacts next year as they were slowed down by injuries. While the 2008 draft class could go down as the "Year of the running back", the 2009 class is full of backs that should have an immediate impact on the next level as well. Here are my running back rankings for this year's class.



1. Knowshon Moreno Georgia: Moreno doesn't have great timed speed, but he has an excellent burst and is a very hard runner. He also has very good vision and while Moreno probably won't be able to handle the ball 25 times a game, he should be a very solid back in the NFL.

2. Chris Wells Ohio State: Wells has great size and has very good feet and vision for a runner his size. He is very good at getting yards after contact and has the speed to finish runs. The only question is if Wells can stay healthy.

3. LeSean McCoy Pittsburgh: McCoy is a very shifty runner who is great at making defenders miss. He is also a good receiver out of the backfield and has a chance of being selected late in round one.

4. Donald Brown Connecticut: Brown is flying up draft boards and while he doesn't have that "wow" factor, he has excellent run instincts and vision. Brown also proved that he can carry a full work load as he had 367 carries for the Huskies last year. Brown should be an excellent value pick in round two but don't be surprised if he sneaks past McCoy and is picked late in the first round.

5. Rashad Jennings Liberty: Coming from Liberty, Jennings isn't known by most casual fans but he certainly has talent. Jennings was the starting running back at Pittsburgh his freshman year before transferring and then went on to have a very good career at Liberty. Jennings is a hard runner who gets better as the game goes on and is a solid receiver out of the backfield. Don't be surprised if he's this year's Matt Forte.

6. Andre Brown NC State: Brown was a highly coveted player out of high school but injuries plagued his career at NC State. He is a very hard runner and is a solid receiver out of the backfield. Due to the facts he looked healthier towards the end of his senior year and he hasn't taken that much of a pounding in college, Brown has the potential to be a much better pro than college player.

7. Gartrell Johnson Colorado State: Johnson is a converted fullback and it shows in his running style. He is the definition of a thumper and is a very hard runner inside. Because of this, Johnson is quicker than you would think and while he doesn't have excellent timed speed, he can get past defenders in the open field. Johnson could have a career very similar to that of Jaguars fullback Greg Jones as he has is a good blocker and could fill in at running back in a pinch.

8. James Davis Clemson: Davis has a solid build and a nose for the endzone as he left Clemson as their all time touchdown leader. He was never a full time back but could be very effective complementary runner like the way LenDale White is used with the Titans.

9. Mike Goodson Texas A&M: Goodson could be the fastest back in the class as he has the ability to score every time he touches the ball. He has very good vision and is hard to bring down. Goodson also due to his athleticism has the ability to really help in the return game even though he was hardly used at Texas A&M. He could be a very good back in a zone blocking scheme and has the potential to be this year's Steve Slaton.

10. Shonn Greene Iowa: Greene was one of the most productive running backs in all of college football last year but he has some things going against him at the next level. He will be a 24 year old rookie and isn't as physical a runner as most would think. On the bright side, he has very good size and waits for the holes to open up. Greene is big enough to complement a speed back and could have a few very good years if forced to carry the load and could end up having a similar career to Rudi Johnson who at one time was arguably one of the best backs in the league.
